Top ten solid travel toiletries for air travel

If you like to travel with a single carry on bag when you travel, then you know that TSA regulations on liquids and gels can really put a damper on your trip. That’s why we put together this top ten list on the best liquid alternative solid travel toiletries.

For a full packing list of everything you will need on a trip, check out our ultimate travel packing list where I include a bunch of tips from my years of travel experience.

Why use solid travel toiletries?

TSA regulations require that you can bring travel-size toiletry liquid and gels only. This is 3.4 ounces (100mL) or less. Also, these liquids need to be packed in a TSA certified single quart see-through plastic bag. This means that you are quite limited in the amount of toiletries that you can bring on a trip. When you combine basic toiletries with make-up, this can easily exceed the regulations. So, the solution is to move towards more airline friendly products that are made of solids. These solids are not regulated in the same way as liquids and gels by the TSA. It may take a few sacrifices, but honestly, there are some really great solid travel toiletries available.

The top 10 best solid travel toiletries

Here we go. We have separated this list into several key categories of toiletries. There are certainly many more categories out there, but we believe that these 10 products will eliminate the need for 90% of liquid and gel products.

Lush shampoo bar solid travel toiletries

Hair products

Lush solid shampoo bar

Lush is the world leader in solid shampoo and cosmetics. If you can only buy one item on this list, this is it. Lush uses a combination of sea salt and seaweed to produce a really great solid alternative to normal shampoo. Serious travelers have sworn by Lush solid shampoos for years. We didn’t add it to this list (mainly because it could be its own post) but Lush also makes some great cosmetics.

J.R. Liggett’s Old Fashioned Shampoo Bar

Another (perhaps more manly) shampoo alternative comes from J.R. Liggett. Vegan and fully biodgradable, these solid shampoos use a mix of several different natural ingredients to make a very good solid shampoo. We especially like these ones because they can actually be used as soap and shaving creme as well in a pinch.

If you have shampoo you’re also going to want conditioner right? These solid bars are good for 100-130 washes which is pretty amazing. Honey Silk uses all natural ingredients on their conditioner bars and they are just about the best you will find.

neutrogena stick sunscreen solid travel toiletries

Sunscreen and bug repellent

Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Stick

This sunscreen stick from Neutrogena is a life saver on trips to tropical areas. It is no mess as well which is a big bonus for me. Often I find normal sunscreen really greasy and messy. The solid stick remedies all of that and safely allows you to bypass TSA regulations. This one is a full SPF 50+ which is great for those of you into adventure trips, camping and hiking.

Repel Sportsman Insect Repellent Stick

I travel a lot in Asia and Africa and have found that insect repellent available locally just isn’t very good. So I always revert to bringing my own. For carry on only trips I have loved Repel Sportsman Insect Repellent. It is 30% deet and lasts for a full 8 hours. Liquid deet can be very heavy on backpacking trips as well, so this solid alternative is a great option.

crystal deodorant solid travel toiletries

Deodorant

Crystal body deodorant stick

Many “solid” deodorants are actually still ceased by TSA agents because they argue that they are actually “gels.” That’s why a lot of serious travelers have started carrying crystal deodorant on carry on only trips. This has been proven to be within TSA regulations time and time again. With daily use, this stick will last you a full year. It is fragrance free as well.

Soap / hand sanitizer

Wet Ones Antibacterial Moist Wipes

Wet Ones have been my saving grace on trips with questionable sanitation services. Purel is also a good option but will often get ceased by TSA agents if it isn’t in an approved 3-1-1 toiletry bag. I can’t tell you how many times these wet wipes have come to the rescue.

Shaving

D.R Harris Arlington Shaving Soap Stick

Shaving cream is by far the biggest wasted space in your carry on bag. The best alternative for most people is a simple soap stick. This one from D.R Harris has a nice fragrance and makes a really great lather.

Travelon Shaving Sheets

Shaving sheets are also another really good option for solid toiletry travel. These are basically small dryer sheet-like items that “activate” when you add water to them. I’ve used them on a few trips and have been very impressed with the lather that they provide. They won’t last as long as a soap stick though.

Laundry

Travelon Laundry Soap Sheets

These laundry soap sheets from Travelon are a very good alternative to normal laundry detergent. These are not subject to TSA carry on rules so you will have more room for actual liquids in your bag if necessary. Like the travel shaving sheets above, these just activate when added to water and provide a very solid lather for washing clothes.
