Briggs & Riley Transcend Domestic Carry-On review
Great build quality, reasonable price
The Briggs & Riley Transcend Domestic Carry-On is the kind of bag that makes you wonder why you ever owned a bag from a different company. Everything is in the right place. Everything feels solid, doesn’t wobble around. Everything just feels right on this bag.
If you’ve been on the fence about making the jump to a higher quality bag, the B&R Transcend is an excellent first jump up.
Great organization and top notch specs
The value from this bag is incredible. For almost half the price of top of the line Tumi or Briggs & Riley bags, this bag checks almost every box that we can think of. It’s a premium bag for a middle of the road price. And for most people this is exactly what they are looking for in a new piece of luggage.
The Briggs & Riley Transcend is made of very durable tuff-lite nylon. This is not quite the same quality as some of the very expensive ballistic nylons we see at the top of the charts, but it is admittedly really good. In our tests we used this bag for a full 6 months, taking international and local flights. We even fully checked this bag several times to see how it held up to baggage handlers. Thankfully, the bag came out the other side without any visible scuffs, scratches or rips.
The pull handle is made from aluminum and features the Briggs & Riley outside mounted system. We absolutely love this design as it frees up room in the bag for your stuff, not the pull handle. We have heard some users having some issues fitting the bag and outside handle in some regional jets due to small overhead bins, but overall we’d say this is something that has more positives than negatives. The practical volume you gain from the outside handle is one of the biggest revelations I’ve had since using Briggs & Riley bags.
The bag features four recessed spinner wheels that are simply the best in the business. Buttery smooth on both airport floors and on gravel/interlock.
One of the best things about the Briggs & Riley Transcend Domestic Carry-On is how light it is. At only 8.7 pounds, you are getting a very durable bag that doesn’t weight you down. Add that to the fact that this bag perfectly fits US carry-on size restrictions at 21″ x 14″ x 9″.
In terms of organization, the Briggs & Riley Transcend is great. In fact, it basically matches up to a lot of the more expensive bags out there. A large U-shaped pocket on the outside of the bag is perfect for a 13″ laptop or tablet. And a second outside pocket is perfect for storing documents, passports and anything else you need to get your hands on quickly. A unique pocket on this bag is the long pocket near the handle of the bag. This pocket is awesome for stowing a water bottle or umbrella.
Inside the main pocket of the bag there are two buckle tie down straps to keep everything organized. The lid features two zippered pockets, one meshed which is great for soiled clothes. There is no wet-side bag for toiletries, but this is easy to forgive considering the premium construction and low price tag.
Finally, the most noticeable feature on the transcend is the detachable cargo net on the outside that is really hand for attaching your jacket, travel pillow or pretty much anything else as you go through the airport.
Warranty and value
Like all Briggs & Riley bags, the Transcend gets arguably the best warranty in the bag business. Period. B&R will actually replace or repair the bag due to ANY damage. This even includes damage caused by airlines. While most companies top out their warranty at one or two years, B&R goes way above and beyond.
Like we said earlier, this bag is pretty incredible value, offering premium features for a very palatable price tag.
Briggs & Riley Transcend Domestic Carry-On review round-up: Should I buy this bag?
We can wholeheartedly recommend this carry on bag to anyone looking for just a notch above typical bags on the market. The warranty kicks ass and the feature set is almost on par with B&R’s top of the line Baseline Domestic carry on bag.
